Mawhiba Represents the Kingdom at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad in Netherlands

In a Competition Held Remotely and With a Team of Four Students

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity "Mawhiba" and the Ministry of Education, will participate in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad, which will be held in the Dutch city "Egmond Ann Zi" during the period from 16 to 20 April, and is implemented remotely due to  Coronavirus pandemic outbreak.


The Kingdom is competing for the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad awards and medals with a team consisting of the students, Lara Mangal from Dar Jana International Schools in Jeddah, Thanaa Al-Haidari from Umm Salamah Secondary School in Makkah, Jude Bahwini from the Quran Memorization School in Yanbu Industrial City, and Rafaa Kanash from Dar Al-Rowad Typical Schools in Jeddah.

 

The Kingdom team participating in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad underwent many intensive training programs to develop their scientific skills. Students were nominated to participate in the Olympics based on the results achieved in the training forums held by "Mawhiba" in cooperation with its partners.


 Through this participation, "Mawhiba" seeks to achieve a new achievement for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the Olympics by joining efforts between "Mawhiba" and the Ministry of Education, to obtain a new achievement added to the nation's record of achievements.


The competition started in the fall of 2009 when the Murray Edwards College at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom proposed to organize a mathematics competition similar to the International Mathematical Olympiad ( IMO) in Europe, with the participation of the continent countries with teams of female students of general education, to support the study of mathematics for girls in European countries. The idea received great support From European countries and beyond, Cambridge University hosted its first edition in April 2012.


It is noteworthy that the Kingdom participated in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad since its inception, and competed for the prizes of its first sessions in 2012 in the United Kingdom, and won during these competitions 15 awards that included two gold medals, 4 silver medals, 6 bronze medals and 3 certificates of appreciation.​
