The Saudis Win Silver and Bronze Medals at the Mendeleev Olympiad in Chemistry

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by King Abdulaziz & his Companions Foundation for Giftedness & Creativity “Mawhiba”, and the Ministry of Education in partnership with KAUST, won two medals (a silver and a bronze) at the Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, from 20 to 28 April, with the participation of 30 countries.

The winners: Osama Al-Ali, won a silver medal and Rabab Al-Rafi'i won a bronze medal at the Mendeleev Olympiad, one of the strongest international competitions in chemistry.


His Excellency Dr. Saud bin Saeed Al-Mutahmi, Secretary General of “Mawhiba” Foundation, dedicated this achievement to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and to the Crown Prince and Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister His Royal Highness, Prince Mohammed bin Salman. for their continuous support to the talented and creative, and their constant guidance on investing in minds, developing intellectual capital, and preparing qualified human cadres to participate in realizing the vision of the Kingdom of 2030.

He also congratulated the winners, their parents, families, schools, and teachers on this victory.


In Mendeleev Olympiad 2019, a team of five male students and one female student represented the Kingdom as follows: Rabab Ali Al-Rafi’i, Mohammad Rashid Al-Hudaithi, Osama Mohammed Al-Ali, Mohammed Hisham Al-Khuraisi, Abdulaziz Abdulrahman Al-Jaid, and Iyad Abdullah Al-Salhi. The students are nominated after being subjected to a number of tests with intensive training, held in partnership with KAUST.


This is the seventh participation of the Kingdom in the Mendeleev Olympiad of Chemistry, and the Kingdom successfully achieved the awards in the previous participations totaling in: (9) bronze medals, 1 silver medal.
