With an unprecedented historical achievement, KSA wins 16 Grand awards and 7 special awards among students from 80 countries at ISEF 2022


The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity “Mawhiba" and the Ministry of Education, won for the sixteenth year in a row 16 Grand awards and 7 special awards during its participation in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair “ISEF 2022" among students of 80 countries. It was held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, from May 7 to 13. The Saudi team participated in it, represented by King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity “Mawhiba" and the Ministry of Education.
 
Salman's sons won two awards in the first place, two awards in the second place, five awards in the third place and six awards in the fourth place.

 
The student, Abdullah Al Ghamdi, ranked first in the energy field for his qualitative project “Engineering a Bifunctional Metal–Organic Framework for Efficient and Cost-Effective Hydrogen Production and Storage". 

The student, Dana Alaithan, ranked first in the field of chemistry for her distinguished project “Selective Dehydrogenation of Formic Acid using an Efficient Cost-effective Ruthenium Based Catalyst for Generating Power in Automobiles". 

The student, Mansour Al-Marzoogi, ranked second in the field of environmental engineering for his distinguished project “Synthesis of a Photo-induced Multifunctional Zr-based Metal-Organic Framework for CO2 Capture and Conversion". The student, Faisal Alkhwaiter, ranked second in the field of plant sciences for his distinguished project “Isolation and Characterization of Plant Growth Promoting Bacteria from Olive Tree Cultivated under Desert Farming in Saudi Arabia".

 The student, Mawaddah, ranked third in the International Science and Engineering Fair ISEF_2022 in the field of Behavioral and Social Sciences for her qualitative project “A Novel Application of Three-dimensional Printing in Personalizing Drug Dosage".

The student, Elaf Muayqil, ranked third in the field of materials science for her qualitative project “Boosting the Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Performance of CuO-Cu2O Heterojunction Thin Films".

The student, Tahani Ahmed, ranked third ⁩ in the field of materials science for her qualitative project “Development of Highly-efficient and Environmentally Friendly CsSnI3 Perovskite Materials for Solar and Thermoelectric Energy Harvesting". 



The student, Ahmed Behisi, ranked third in the field of plant sciences for his qualitative project “Combating Parasitic Seed Infestations Using Cytokinins in Different Combinations with Fluridone and an Ethylene Precursor".

The student, Abdullah Alhamadat, ranked ⁩ third ⁩ in the field of energy for his qualitative project:  “Co-ferrite Modified Hematite Films for All-day Active Photoelctrocatalyst Anode in Water Splitting".

The student, Rafaa Qanash, ranked fourth in the field of engineering mechanic for her qualitative project “Determining the Auto-Ignition Characteristics of Hydrogen in Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition Engines".

The student, Faisal Saad AlGhamdi, ranked fourth in the field of plant sciences for his distinguished project “A Heterologous System Examination of JACKDAW Mutant Variants' Effects on Complex Formation with SHORT-ROOT and SCARECROW". 

The student, Lamar Hussain Alkaka, ranked fourth in the field of earth and environmental sciences for her qualitative project “Estimating the Capillary Pressure of Reservoir Rocks using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Logging". 

The student, Areej Bajawi, ranked fourth in the field of chemistry for her qualitative project “Development of a Novel Hybrid Compound as a Single-Source Precursor for Nanocrystalline Manganese Oxide and Sulfide".

The student, Maria Al Ghamdi, ranked fourth in the field of chemistry for her qualitative project “Enhancing the Phtoelectrocatalytic Performance of WO3 Decorated with COo using Electrodeposition for Water Splitting".

The student, Maryam Alabdulbaqi, ranked fourth in the field of translational medical science for her impressive project “Benzodioxin Derivatives as Dual Inhibitors for α-amylase and α-glucosidase for Managing Type 2 Diabetes".

With this achievement, the KSA raised the balance of its awards at ISEF 2022 to 106 awards, as it participates in the exhibition since 2007, including 69 Grand awards and 37 special awards.

H.E. Dr. Saud Al Mathami, Secretary General of King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity “Mawhiba" Foundation, extended his warmest congratulations and compliments to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and H.H. the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Muhammad bin Salman, Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense - may Allah protect them - for this new national achievement, which the grace of Allah Almighty has achieved, and then with the support of the wise leadership - may Allah protect them - for the country's sons, which resulted in this uniqueness and excellence among the developed countries in international forums and competitions.


He also congratulated the Ministry of Education, the students, their families, schools and teachers for the achievement, wishing them further success.


Dr. Al Mathami confirmed the importance of the joint effort of “Mawhiba" Foundation and the Ministry of Education to continue such achievements and achieving the goals and initiatives of the KSA's Vision 2030, by efficiently and effectively upgrading the aptitudes and talents of gifted and talented students in the public education stages, according to the latest scientific methods in the education of gifted people, considering it as the entity having most comprehensive approach in the field of giftedness and creativity all over the world.


He added that the complementary partnership between Mawhiba and the Ministry of Education and their strategic and supportive partners, especially SABIC, Saudi Electricity, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and Aramco, contributed to the development of an environment, climate, giftedness and creativity system that provides students with a rich environment for acquiring science and knowledge. It highly elevates them and their skills.


The Secretary General of “Mawhiba" stated that this partnership produced honorable models of Saudi human capital that is efficient in achievement and competing giants on the podiums and has the ability to create solutions to sustainable development problems encountering the world in order for the prosperity of humanity.
 
The Saudi science and engineering team included 35 male and female students of 11 educational departments, who participated in qualitative projects in promising fields, including artificial intelligence, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals and environment. They have been selected out of 40 males and females winning Grand awards in the National Olympiad for Scientific Creativity “Ibdaa 2022", which is one of 19 different programs provided annually by Mawhiba to gifted students who are annually discovered in the KSA.
 

The KSA, represented by Mawhiba Foundation, also participated in “ISEF 2022" as a main sponsor. It presented 18 special awards for the best projects participating in the field of energy, as it regularly participates each year. These included scholarships at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and fellowships to attend the Mawhiba Universal Enrichment Program as well as cash rewards.
 
ISEF attracted during this year more than 2000 participants of public education students, representing more than 80 countries. This is the KSA's 16th consecutive participation in the ISEF, as it started its participation since 2007, in an annual program organized by “Mawhiba" Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Education. The Saudi students won during the previous participations 83 awards, including 69 Grand  awards and 37 special awards. The Foundation also presented annual international special awards in the competition for student of 23 countries.
 
The Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair “ISEF" is considered the largest fair for competition in the field of pre-university scientific research and creativity.
